What or who inspired you to study audio?
I was into musical theatre when I was a kid, I was curious about how the sound works beyond the stage. Where I grew up, audio engineering is not a familiar gig – at least not until recently. So my curiosity of what’s happening behind the curtains led me to study the field.
What did you do once you graduated from SAE?
I realized there were not many audio vacancies at theatres, so I kept browsing and applying everywhere else. After a few months I finally got a job making sound effects at a gaming company in Henderson, turns out I really like it. I was lucky they were looking for a junior position, so I took my chances and gave my best at the interview and practical test.
What did you enjoy most about your time at SAE?
Access to the recording studios, meeting people who shared the same interest in the field and being friends with them, and then having some great lecturers and guest lecturers.
What have the highlights of your career been so far?
Doing a talk at NZ Game Developers Conference in 2021!
If you could work with anyone, who would it be?
Hmm… Marvel studio would be nice.
What’s next for you?
Hmm… Doing a Masters degree would be great.
What advice would you give someone looking to get into a career in audio?
Be yourself and always keep an open mind. It is easy to throw around “I graduated from SAE” in your resume, but showing up and doing the mahi is actually what counts.
